Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to state problems that occur while traveling and learn the functional language for proposing solutions. The students will have extensively practiced technical vocabulary for stating problems in work situations on industrial sites in several communicative activities.
PLANNING AND PREPARATION FOR THE CLASS
As with another group I taught, I decided to try the worksheet method for this group. The software to be used was Collaborate, which has the same functionality as Adobe Connect. I approached planning for the lesson based on the fact that the students can work in breakouts and have an opportunity for rich interaction. I planned to make the lesson very communicative, as this course is delivered as a blended course, and all the tasks and materials for each lesson for passing the course are posted on Moodle. The students do not have to come to the synchronized classroom if it is inconvenient for their schedules, they can perform the tasks individually at home. Transferring of the instruction online due to COVID-19 lowered students’ necessity to be present in synchronous instruction. If any students showed up for my class, my purpose was to make it as communicative as possible for the students to benefit best from interaction with peers, because restricted practice could be done at home alone as well. I planned collaborative activities using Flinga, role-play exercises, discussion exercises, and games.
HOW DID I FEEL BEFORE CLASS?
My guiding teacher was unable to join the class as she had an urgent health situation to attend to. It was the first-time during TP I had to manage the class alone without supervision and using new software. I did feel a bit anxious, however, I felt also optimistic, as I knew the students well and knew that we could figure things out together if something went wrong.
HOW DO I FEEL AFTER THE CLASS?
Only three students showed up for the class. I believe all the rest decided to work individually on the tasks in Moodle. I feel good, as the class went well and we had a genuinely communicative and interesting lesson with rich student-student interaction.
WHAT WENT WELL IN CLASS? WHAT WORKED?
Students were very enthusiastic about doing all the oral activities, they spoke a lot and they used English all the time. The three students present possess very high language competency, no problems or breakdowns of communication occurred. Roleplay activities, discussions with personalized questions, and Alias game were the most successful and fun.
WHAT DIDN’T GO SO WELL? WHAT WOULD I CHANGE?
All activities worked well. There were no technological issues, the interaction was active and objectives were achieved.
MY STRENGTHS
– Logical lesson flow
– Interactive activities
– Active and effective facilitation
POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT
This was a very successful, in my opinion, lesson, one of the best I’ve had during my TP. The fact that there were only 3 students who decided to come did not influence the achievement of the planned goals and successful interaction. I feel more confident teaching smaller groups as I can attend more effectively to the various needs of all the students. It was a great class and I managed it well.
